Introduction:
As a family, we enjoy spending time together during holidays, making memories, and sharing delicious meals. However, we have observed that the true meaning of holidays has gradually shifted towards materialism. This blog post highlights our experiences during Easter and how we have made changes to reflect our convictions.
Easter:
It was always such a great moment seeing the kids wake up and see Easter baskets filled to the brim with all the goodies! Chocolate, candy, toys, and more! Over the years, we have noticed how Easter has become more about materialism, focusing on the Easter bunny and the gifts he brings. Advertisements for Easter basket fillers have become increasingly ridiculous, with recommendations ranging from expensive toys to electronics such as Air Pods and Bose headphones. (Insert eye roll here) As a family, we believe that this materialistic trend is contrary to the true meaning of Easter, which should be about reflecting on the life and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Changes We Made:
In the past, we used to go all out during Easter, buying toys and candy to fill the baskets for each of our kids. However, as our family grew, the expenses and stress associated with this tradition became overwhelming, and we started losing sight of the real reason for Easter. Over the past 2 years, we have made significant changes to our approach to Easter. Instead of giving individual Easter baskets to our kids, we now have a family Easter basket. This basket includes items such as games, outdoor fun items, and movie tickets, as well as a small amount of candy for each child. We have also replaced traditional Easter eggs with Resurrection eggs, which teach the resurrection story of Jesus.

God Comes First:
As a family, we prioritize God in everything we do. We have prayed over our convictions about how we celebrate holidays and have made changes that reflect our beliefs. We will no longer allow big corporations to steal the real meaning of Christian holidays from our family. If you feel any convictions about how your family celebrates holidays, I encourage you to pray and seek guidance from God. He is faithful and will show you what changes to implement.
Family Basket Ideas:
One of the beautiful things about a family basket is the items bring the family together. It creates more memories and unity among the family unit.
Here are some great ideas to include in your family Easter basket:
- Family Time Together game (conversation card game)
- "Movie Tickets" & popcorn
- S'mores ingredients
- Toss & Catch game (great for all ages)
Conclusion:
As a family, we believe that holidays should be about spending time with loved ones, making memories, and reflecting on the things that matter most. We have made changes to our approach to Easter that reflect our convictions and prioritize the true meaning of Easter. If you feel the same convictions that I experienced, Ask, Seek & Knock. God will answer and direct your steps.
